Characteristic Two dorsal fins, spines VII, soft rays 12; anal rays III, 8. Body covered with small ctenoid scales, lateral-line scales 84-93, lateral-line series 140-163. First gill arch with gill rakers 7-9 on upper limb, 13-16 on lower limb. Body back is purplish grey, abdomen silver white. Caudal fin white in the edge.
habitats Inhabit deeper rocky reef near continental shelf, about 100m depth. Spawning during summer, carnivorous, feed on fishes and other invertebrates. 
Distribution Western Pacific: Japan, Taiwan to the Philippines. 
Utility Commercial speceis, but not usually caught.
